A Five Minute Pause for a Loud Day

2 min read

Some days arrive already loud. Messages stack up. Someone needs something from you. The to-do list grows while you are still reading it.

On days like that, a long practice can feel out of reach. You do not need an hour. You do not need a quiet room, a cushion, or the right mood. Five minutes is enough to step out of the rush for a moment.

A pause is not a fix

A pause does not make the day smaller. It gives you a place to stand while the day goes on. You are not trying to fix anything or feel a certain way. For five minutes, you are simply choosing where your attention goes.

A five minute pause to try today

  1. Find a place to sit. A chair, a car seat, the edge of the bed. Feet flat on the floor if you can.

  2. Set a timer for five minutes so you do not have to watch the clock.

  3. Turn your phone face down. Let your eyes close, or rest them on one spot in front of you.

  4. Notice where your body meets the seat and where your feet meet the floor. Stay with that for about a minute.

  5. Take a slow breath in through your nose. Let it out a little more slowly than it came in. Keep going at your own pace. There is no need to count.

  6. When your mind wanders, and it will, quietly bring it back to your feet or your breath. Coming back is the practice.

  7. When the timer sounds, open your eyes slowly. Look around the room before you stand up.

What you may notice

Your mind may stay busy. That is normal, and it does not mean you did it wrong. Some days five minutes feels long. Some days it passes quickly. Either one counts. There is nothing to achieve here, only a few minutes that belong to you.

Make it small enough to repeat

One short pause you actually take is worth more than a long plan you keep putting off. Pick a moment that already happens every day. Before your first cup of coffee. After lunch. Right before you walk in the door at home. Let the pause travel with something you already do.

If five minutes feels like too much today, start with one. One minute still counts.
