Each November, we take time to honor our veterans, those who have served, sacrificed, and carried the weight of experiences most of us will never know. Veterans Day is not only about gratitude; it’s also about recognition. Recognition of the visible and invisible effects of war. Recognition of the resilience that follows. And recognition that healing is not only possible, but necessary.
The Body Carries What the Mind Can’t Always Name
The human body has an incredible capacity to adapt in times of stress, danger, and trauma. But it also has a remarkable memory. Experiences that are too overwhelming to process in the moment often settle into the body, into the muscles, the breath, the nervous system.
For many veterans, this can manifest as chronic tension, pain, disrupted sleep, or a sense of unease that lingers long after returning home. These aren’t just physical symptoms, they’re messages from the body, asking to be acknowledged, supported, and released.
The Wisdom of Lineage
In many Native American and Indigenous cultures, there is a deep understanding that trauma doesn’t end with one person. It is carried through families, through energy, through story and silence alike. The body holds these echoes of the past, and they can be passed down from one generation to the next.
Science now mirrors this wisdom, showing that stress and trauma can influence genetic expression and shape how future generations experience the world. This perspective invites compassion, not only for those who have served, but for the families and communities who also carry those ripples.
